Burt Munro - Worlds Fastest Indian:
Burt Munro, a New Zealand motorcyclist builds and races his 1920 Indian Scout to become known as the "Worlds Fastest Indian" rider:
Born in 1899 and dying in 1978, Munro sold motorcycles in New Zealand most of his life. He raced his 1920 Indian Scout which he bought new, on a very limited budget. Burt never had much money, but had a great deal of zeal and enthusiasm. He turned his Indian side valve engine into an overhead cam engine, and enlarged the engine from 600cc to around 950cc. His first speed record dates back to 1938 where he became the fastest New Zealander on a motorcycle. Munro visited the salt flats in the early 1960's but did not race on his first visit. He won speed records in 1962, 1966. and 1967. His highest official speed was 183.586 mph, however, he ran an unofficial 205.67 mph at one time. Burt Munro was placed in the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame in 2006. Without question, Munro's dedication and persistance is legendary.
